With the oncoming heat wave, it’s easy to stress our precious turf. We’ve worked too hard to let this happen.
The current settings are in place at the five FOD fields, as of Sunday, May 18. They will be lengthened after school is out.
Basic strategy:
1) provide heaviest watering 3 times/week, with no conflicts with other stations, between Midnight and 7am. After school is out, extend this to 9am. The intent of these cycles is to infiltrate moisture deep into the soil, for healthier roots. Current station timing: 35 minutes, with 15min water/15min soak cycling.
2) during hottest weather, supplement the deeper watering with shorter period sprinkling, every night, between 9pm and Midnight. The intent of this is to counteract the daily surficial evaporation brought on by scorching temperatures and dry winds. During these hours, operate up to 14 heads simultaneously (some overlap between soccer and Di/So/Fo, FH/LAX and Band Practice). Stadium sprinkling in the late evening has no overlap with other fields.
As always, if you observe irrigation trouble at the field, please let me know (jhartley07@gmail.com).
We all deeply appreciate the work Les Will does to keep the individual heads tuned, and it is good to see others beginning to learn all he knows and carry on for him. If you’d like to shadow Les on one of his upcoming school visits, email him at marles@surewest.net. He’ll enjoy your company!
