It’s the start of the 2009-10 academic year, and the Stadium and Bronco Hill fields are set to go! The capable and generous volunteer efforts by Les Will (Band), Gregg Lawson (Lacrosse), Don Fagan (Football/Lacrosse), Stephen Hibbs (Soccer), Athletic Director Steve Coburn and Jim Hartley (Tennis) started early and finished early, with all five parent-maintained fields freshly aerated, fertilized, overseeded, and dragged. The day wrapped up with careful adjustments and reprogramming of the irrigation heads to assure complete and even coverage of the fields.
The day went well because parents from all sports pitched in. Because of this day’s work, the fields should respond well when temperatures begin to drop in late September and October, if not before. Special Adviser Ruben Garcia also came to inspect our work, and discussed best practices for field management at the end of the fall and spring seasons.
We will have occasional work parties throughout the year - at the end of fall, to prepare for the next spring; at the beginning of spring, to trim, fertilize and overseed for the upcoming season; and at the end of spring, to button the fields up for the summer. If you are interested in being part of this work, or are interested in community service hours helping maintain the fields, send an email to Jim Hartley (jhartley07@gmail.com) or Don Fagan (oceansports11@yahoo.com). There’s always something helpful to do!
