This Fall the Fields have taken twice the traffic they usually do, and unless we work together to restore them…the fields will probably not be in the condition our athletes need for the Spring.
It will take two days of weekend work at the end of the season. When we’re done the fields will be fertilized and overseeded; and the bare areas will be fertilized, heavily seeded, covered with topper, and fenced off to protect them over the winter. It’s going to take up to 20 people each weekend, so please check with your coach for which day your team is helping out - or come for both!
On Sunday November 15 (8am-noon), we will:
- Overseed Band Practice perimeter, LAX/Field Hockey, and Soccer (except south), (total: 14 bags overseed, 11 bags intense seed - see below)
- Drag the seed into the turf on LAX/Field Hockey and Soccer (except south)
- Fertilize these 3 fields (total: 24 bags of fertilizer)
- Execute Fall Rescue operations on the South third of Soccer: intensely aerate, intensely seed (6 bags), spread topper (24 50-lb bags), and fence off the area to prevent trespass by bicycles and dogs (540 ft; 60-70 fence poles)
- Execute Fall Rescue operations on most of Band Practice: intensely aerate, intensely seed (5 bags), spread topper (18 50-lb bags), and fence off the area to prevent trespass by bicycles and dogs (up to 550 ft; 60-65 fence poles)
On this weekend, we will need two light trucks or SUVs with hitches, and at least 12 volunteers with gloves, leaf rakes (for topper spreading), and strong shoulders (to pound in 40-50 fence poles). An extra wheelbarrow and a second fence pounder would come in handy.
On Sunday November 22 (8am-noon), we will:
- Execute Fall Rescue operations on the Stadium Crown/sideline: intensely aerate, fertilize, overseed the perimeter (5 bags) and intensely seed the crown (5 bags), spread topper (18 50-lb bags), and fence off the area to prevent trespass by bicycles and dogs (750 ft; 90-100 fence poles)
- Aerate, fertilize and drag the Discus field
On this weekend, we will need two light trucks or SUVs with hitches, one for each field; and at least 16 volunteers with gloves, leaf rakes (for topper spreading), and strong shoulders (to pound in 100 fence poles). Extra wheelbarrows and fence pounders would come in handy.
This is an important activity for the athletes to pitch in to, and for the team clubs to show their support for. The fields are the sport and booster clubs’ responsibility to keep in the condition our athletes need - this is the time to set the fields up to be restored to playing condition for the Spring.
A detailed program of which activity and how many bags is on the attached spreadsheet.
A detailed plan for both Nov 15 and Nov 22 are on the attached sheets. We’ll be using these to map out the work.
